Zurich in December is the ultimate winter destination, and it’s an amazing choice for a festive weekend getaway. With its charming Christmas markets, cozy fondue dinners, and breathtaking trips to the Alps, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a winter fairy tale.
I recently spent a weekend in Zurich, and it was packed with magic, from sipping hot Glühwein at the Christmas markets to enjoying panoramic views from Mt. Rigi. If you’re planning a weekend in Zurich, here’s the perfect itinerary to make the most of your time, whether you’re travelling solo or as a group!
Weekend in Zurich: Where to Stay
For a stylish yet budget-friendly stay during your weekend in Zurich, I highly recommend Motel One Zurich. Located just a short walk from the city’s Old Town and Bahnhofstrasse, this boutique-style hotel offers chic, modern rooms with all the comforts you need after a day of exploring.
The lobby is beautifully designed, blending Swiss elegance with contemporary flair, and the cozy bar is perfect for a nightcap before heading to bed. Plus, with rooms starting around CHF150 per night, it’s an affordable option that doesn’t compromise on quality or location.
Weekend in Zurich: What to Do
Day 1: Christmas Markets, Shopping, and Fondue
Morning: Breakfast at Sprüngli
Start your weekend in Zurich with breakfast at Sprüngli, the renowned Swiss patisserie on Paradeplatz. Their famous hot chocolate and Birchermüesli are the perfect way to kick off a cold winter morning. And don’t leave without trying their Luxemburgerli macarons—they make for a sweet snack as you explore the city later in the day.
Late Morning: Explore Zurich’s Old Town
After breakfast, head to Zurich’s Old Town (Altstadt) for a leisurely wander through the charming, cobblestone streets. The Old Town feels extra magical in December with many festive decorations hanging above the narrow lanes. You’ll find plenty of unique boutiques, perfect for picking up gifts or souvenirs.
Afternoon: Discover Zurich’s Christmas Markets
Zurich’s Christmas markets are the heart of the city’s festive spirit, and they’re perfect for soaking in the holiday cheer. My top three markets to visit are:
Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Hauptbahnhof: Located inside the main train station, this is one of Europe’s largest indoor Christmas markets. The Swarovski-adorned Christmas tree is a major highlight, and the stalls offer everything from handmade gifts to Swiss chocolates. I loved the warm raclette served on crispy potatoes—comfort food at its finest!
Wienachtsdorf at Bellevue: Set near Lake Zurich, this market feels like stepping into a festive village. With an ice rink and live music, it’s the perfect spot for a cosy evening. Grab a hot Glühwein and browse the beautifully decorated wooden stalls selling Swiss crafts and treats.
Sechseläutenplatz Christmas Market: This market, located near the Zurich Opera House, is a bit more relaxed but no less charming. We grabbed roasted chestnuts and strolled through the rustic stalls before heading to dinner.

Evening: Fondue Dinner at Swiss Chuchi
No winter weekend in Zurich is complete without indulging in some Swiss fondue. For the best experience, head to Swiss Chuchi in the Old Town, where you can enjoy traditional fondue made from Gruyère and Emmental cheeses.
We shared a pot of fondue with bread and potatoes for dipping—it was a cozy and delicious way to warm up after a full day of exploring. For an authentic Swiss experience, don’t forget to order a side of kirsch, the traditional cherry brandy that pairs perfectly with fondue. A small sip in between cheesy bites enhances the rich flavours, making the whole meal super indulgent.

After dinner, you have to take a walk down Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most famous shopping streets. The entire street sparkles with Christmas lights, and honestly looks like stars in the sky and are some of the best Christmas lights I’ve seen in any city!

Day 2: Day Trip to Mt. Rigi and Luzern Christmas Market
Morning: Train Ride to Mt. Rigi
For Day 2 of your weekend in Zurich, escape the city and head into the Swiss Alps for a stunning winter adventure. Make your way to Zurich’s main station, Zurich HB and you’ll want the train to Arth-Goldau.
The trip takes around a 45-minutes but is quite pleasant and as it passes along the Zugersee lake and through some smaller towns outside of Zurich, including Zug.
Once you’ve made it to Arth-Goldau you’ll want to board the cogwheel train that takes you up to the top of Mt. Rigi. The ride itself is magical. Slow but beautiful as it winds up the mountain through snow-covered forests and villages.

If you’re keen for a bit of walking you can get off one stop before the summit at Rigi Staffel. Be warned, it is a complete incline to the top, so if you’re not in the mood for an uphill battle, then I’d recommend staying on the train until Rigi Kulm.
However once you reach the summit at Rigi Kulm, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking 360-degree views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps.
There are lots of spots for photos, and it’s hard to beat the peace and beauty from the top of the mountain. However the it can be windy and the wind is icy cold this time of year, so make sure you are prepared with the right gear.

Lunch at Rigi-Kaltbad
There is a hotel restaurant at Rigi Kulm, however it’s very basic. If you’re looking for something a bit more hearty (and tasty) make your way down to Rigi-Kaltbad for lunch. Gratalp Stübli is reasonably priced if you’re on more of a budget – think (more) fondue or sandwiches. They also have pastas and other meat dishes and a selection of desserts.
But my recommendation would be the flamkuchen, which is sort of like a Swiss pizza, topped with creme fraiche, onions and bacon. You can’t really go wrong and is a perfect warmer after your walk from Rigi Kulm.
If you’re not on so much of a budget then Regina Montium is a bit more upmarket (maybe not the best if you’re in full hiking gear), but serves exquisite local Swiss dishes with the addition of showcase panoramic Alpine views.
Afternoon: Hike Down to Vitznau and Boat Ride to Luzern
After lunch, you will want to take the scenic hike down to Vitznau, a quaint village on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The hike takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and offers stunning views of the mountains and lake. At this time of year the trees are totally covered with snow and are completely untouched and pure white. It really does feel like a winter wonderland as you’re walking.
It’s also much quieter during the winter months, with very few people hiking the paths. So you’ll have plenty of moments to soak up the fresh mountain and air and take in the spectacular views.

Once you reach Vitznau, board a boat for a scenic ride across Lake Lucerne to the city of Lucerne. The ferry that takes your there are actually old steam boats and quite impressive. The boats usually go every hour, so make sure to check the timetable before you set off. If you have one of the Saver Day Passes, then you can also use it on these boats. If you don’t have a pass, you can buy tickets for the boat online too.
The boat ride itself took about 45 minutes and was one of the most peaceful parts of the trip—the lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, we spent most of the ride outside take in the view (despite the temperature!). The boat has a cafe and facilities and is very modern and clean. Our boat arrived into Lucerne just as the sun was setting, which was absolutely picture perfect as we disembarked.
Evening: Luzern Christmas Market
When you arrive in Lucerne, head right out of the ferry terminal and walk along the lake front to the Franziskanerplatz Christmas Market. It’s about a 10 minute walk. This market is smaller than Zurich’s, but it feels much more intimate and cozy.
Make sure to grab a traditional Swiss sausage with cabbage and another cup of Glühwein while browsing the stalls filled with handmade crafts and holiday gifts. Stalls sell the usual Christmas market goods. Sweets, handmade jewellery and clothes.
There are also plenty of small sitting areas, many with open fires, which to me is just perfect. Imagine spending the remainder of your night just sipping on wine in front of a warming fire.

Once you’re finished exploring the market, you can take the train back to Zurich (it’s a quick 45-minute ride). Walk back towards the direction of the ferry terminal and you’ll find the bahnhof (train station) just before it. About 8 minutes walk from the market.
Day 3: Brunch at Haus Hiltl and Farewell Stroll
Morning: Brunch at Haus Hiltl
For your last day, treat yourself to brunch at Haus Hiltl, Zurich’s iconic vegetarian restaurant. Founded in 1898, Haus Hiltl holds the title of the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant, and their brunch buffet is an absolute dream. From fresh salads and falafel to hearty veggie stews and decadent desserts, there’s something for everyone—even non-vegetarians will love it!
The all-you-can-eat brunch costs around CHF 63 per person with a glass of prosecco, so come hungry and make the most of it!
Farewell Stroll by Lake Zurich
Before wrapping up your weekend in Zurich, take a relaxing walk along Lake Zurich. The lakeside promenade is peaceful and scenic, with views of the snow-capped mountains in the distance. In December, the trees are strung with fairy lights, and the occasional snowfall adds an extra touch of winter magic.

If you have time, stop by one last Christmas market (there are plenty of smaller ones all across the city) for a final souvenir or another cup of hot chocolate before heading to the airport or catching your train.
Zurich in December is the perfect destination for a festive winter escape, and there’s no better way to spend a weekend than by exploring the city’s magical Christmas markets, indulging in Swiss fondue, and taking a scenic day trip to the snow-covered Alps. Whether you’re planning a solo trip, a romantic getaway, or a girls’ weekend, Zurich in December offers the perfect mix of city charm, Alpine adventure, and festive fun.
